Hampshire's Solent Shore Village

Hook with Warsash and the Eastern Connection

1950

The relationship between Hill Head and the neighbouring community of Hook with Warsash has been an important aspect of local life, particularly since the postwar expansion of both settlements. Hook lies immediately to the east of Hill Head, and the two communities share a stretch of coastline, local facilities and transport links. The parish of Hook with Warsash was historically a separate entity, centred on the village of Warsash on the River Hamble, but the growth of housing in the Hook area brought it into closer contact with Hill Head. The two areas are connected by the coastal path and by local roads, and residents of Hill Head frequently use the shops, pubs and marina facilities at Warsash. The boundary between the two communities is not always obvious on the ground, and there is a degree of shared identity among residents. Hook Park, a green space on the boundary, serves both communities. In administrative terms, Hill Head falls within Fareham borough council, as does most of Hook with Warsash, and the two areas have sometimes been grouped together for planning and electoral purposes. The connection between the communities reflects the broader pattern of settlement along this stretch of coast, where villages have gradually grown towards each other without fully merging.
