Creation of the Solent Way Long-Distance Path
1984
The Solent Way, a long-distance walking route running approximately 60 miles along the Hampshire coast from Milford-on-Sea to Emsworth, was established in the 1980s. The section passing through Hill Head quickly became one of the most popular stretches of the entire route. The path follows the clifftop and beach through the village, passing the harbour, the Osborne View, and continuing along the coast past Meon Shore and the edge of Titchfield Haven. The creation of the Solent Way formalised what had long been an informal walking route along the coast, giving it signposting, waymarks and recognition in walking guides. For Hill Head, the Solent Way brought a steady flow of visitors, particularly walkers completing the full route or tackling day-long sections. The path also reinforced the village's identity as a coastal community, connecting it visually and physically to the wider Hampshire shoreline. The Solent Way section through Hill Head offers views across to the Isle of Wight, passes through diverse coastal habitats and provides access to the nature reserve boundary. It remains one of the most valued amenities for residents and visitors, used daily by dog walkers, joggers and those simply enjoying the coastal scenery.
