Lee Ground
A scattered residential area between Hill Head and Lee-on-the-Solent, close to the former HMS Daedalus site.
Lee Ground is a small area on the western fringes of Hill Head, sitting between the main village and Lee-on-the-Solent. The name refers to the open ground and former common land in this transitional zone. The area has a somewhat scattered character, with houses spread along lanes rather than concentrated in a defined centre. Historically, this land was part of the wider agricultural hinterland of the Titchfield and Crofton parishes, and it retains a slightly rural feel despite the suburban development that has filled in much of the surrounding area. Lee Ground is close to the former HMS Daedalus site at Lee-on-the-Solent, a Royal Navy air station that operated from 1917 until its closure in 1996. The Daedalus site has since been partially redeveloped for housing and employment use, and its proximity has influenced the character of the Lee Ground area. Residents here are well placed for access to both Hill Head's coast and Lee-on-the-Solent's seafront and facilities. The area is largely residential, with detached houses on generous plots being the predominant housing type. There are no shops or services in Lee Ground itself, with residents looking to either Hill Head village centre or Lee-on-the-Solent for their needs. The area is quiet and relatively little known, even among residents of neighbouring communities.
