Hampshire's Solent Shore Village

Crofton

A quiet postwar residential area with a well-used community centre, set between Hill Head and Stubbington.

Crofton is a residential area lying to the north and northeast of Hill Head, forming part of the wider Stubbington and Hill Head community within Fareham borough. The area is centred on Crofton Lane and the streets that branch off it, including the roads around Crofton Community Centre, which serves as an important local venue for meetings, classes and social events. The housing in Crofton is largely postwar, with a significant amount of development from the 1960s and 1970s, including both houses and bungalows. The area has a settled, suburban feel, with well-maintained gardens and quiet streets. Crofton is slightly further from the coast than central Hill Head, but residents can walk to the seafront in around fifteen minutes. The area is well placed for access to the main road network, with Stubbington Lane and Peak Lane providing routes to Fareham, the M27 and Gosport. There are no shops in Crofton itself, with residents relying on the small parade in Hill Head village centre or the larger range of facilities in Stubbington. Crofton Community Centre hosts a variety of groups and activities, from fitness classes to craft groups, and is a well-used local facility. The area is popular with retirees and families drawn by the quiet streets and proximity to both the coast and local schools. Bay House School, a secondary school serving the Gosport and Fareham area, is accessible from the eastern side of Crofton.
